Hora

Hora, the name of an Israeli folk dance, reflects the symbolic importance of the ring dance in Israeli culture and identity. In these works, groups of printed figures, appropriated from personal and archival images of folk dancing, are turned into flattened shadows of a constitutive past. Looking at communal aspects of Israel’s histories, particularly in the Kibbutz, the works emphasise the existing tensions between notions of collectivity and individual experience. In the work, the ring dance regains its status as a national symbol of belonging to the homeland, yet is problematized by a shared resemblance which assimilates individuals into one collective body.
